New Store Opening IT Checklist for Retail and QSR Brands

Retail store ready for opening with IT set up by i4T

A new store opening date is usually fixed long before the IT work is planned. Fit-out runs late, hardware arrives in parts and the network link is the last thing to go live. The result is a store that opens with a billing counter on a mobile hotspot or a CCTV system that nobody has configured.

This checklist covers the IT work that needs to be finished before the shutters go up, based on how i4T supports new store openings for retail and QSR brands.

1. Network Design and Connectivity

  • Confirm the primary internet link and a backup link, and order both early
  • Plan cabling, switches, routers, firewalls and Wi-Fi coverage for the store layout
  • Separate networks for POS, back office, guest Wi-Fi and CCTV where needed
  • Test connectivity to head office systems, payment gateways and cloud applications

2. Point of Sale Systems

  • Install and configure POS terminals, printers, scanners and cash drawers
  • Integrate POS with inventory management and payment processing
  • Load the store master: items, prices, taxes, discounts and user roles
  • Run test transactions, including refunds and end-of-day reports

3. Digital Signage and Displays

Menu boards in a QSR and promotional screens in retail are often installed by a separate vendor. Bring them into the same plan so screens are mounted, connected to the network and loaded with content before opening.

4. Security Systems

  • CCTV cameras placed for counters, entrances, stockrooms and cash areas
  • Recording, retention and remote viewing configured and tested
  • Access control and alarm systems connected and handed over

5. Hardware and Software Deployment

  • Workstations, servers (if any), networking devices and peripherals installed and tagged
  • Software installed with correct licensing and tested for compatibility
  • Every device recorded in the asset register against the new store

Asset tagging at this stage saves a lot of effort later. See our article on IT asset management for retail chains for why.

6. Training and Documentation

Store staff need to know how to use the new systems on day one. Short training sessions on POS, end-of-day processes and basic troubleshooting, plus simple user guides, reduce the number of calls in the first week.

7. Day-One and Post-Opening Support

The first few days of trading surface issues that testing missed. Plan for an engineer on site or on call during opening and route all issues through the service desk so they are tracked.

Bringing It Together

The common thread is coordination. Network providers, hardware vendors, signage teams and the brand's own IT all need to finish their work in the right order. A single partner who owns the IT plan for the opening keeps that sequence on track.

i4T's New Store Opening: Procurement & Services covers infrastructure setup, POS systems, digital signage, security systems, hardware and software deployment, network setup, training and ongoing support, delivered through a pan-India engineer presence.
